I've been keeping updated on the progress being made, and when I see posts like this from Recycler, it really gets me excited:

17:11 < recycler> oh my god
17:11 < recycler> I just found the bottleneck in vaultmp
17:11 < recycler> now it runs 44x times faster
17:11 < recycler> woooooooot

(this may be the solution for all sync problems)"

Anyway, it seems that every day this is closer to becoming a reality, and at some point after a stable release someone will start thinking about setting up their own server. I would love to do it, but I'm not a good scripter at all. I'm great in the GECK and general modding, but like most of us here the odds of myself ever running my own customized server are slim to none.

However, the folks who may take up that mantle may look to the community for ideas and suggestions. So lets hear them, if only to keep the excitement and motivation up, or give us something to talk about.

For the purposes of discussion, I ask that this thread be kept on the topic of New Vegas. If someone wants to start a similar thread for Fallout 3, I'll be more than happy to participate in that one.

The main reason I'm focusing on New Vegas is that I think the game mechanics give a much greater flexibility to the modding community, and will merge much more easily with a Multi-Player project like this one.

To kick it off, some things I've been thinking about have dealt mostly with PvE and how a simple Wastelander could make a decent existence for himself in the wasteland. With the boosted crafting capabilities, this wouldn't be too hard. Through perks or skill requirements, it would be fairly simple to set up crafting professions/specialties, or any sort of other character specialization. With all the flexibility in the crafting system, it could be ingeniously simple to so difficult that it's the stuff nightmares are made of. The sky is the limit.

Some Character Specializations I would personally enjoy seeing are:

1. Prospector. Scavenging ruins, caves, old vehicles and buildings for useful items. There could be a series of perks dedicated to this specialization (Sort of like Fortune Finder) that increase the quality of loot found in all sorts of area's.

2. Hunter. A Wastelander could make a living hunting wild Brahmin, Big Horners, Gecko's, and other critters for meat, pelts, or other resources that are needed for a variety of things. Hides for leather armors, meat for cooking food, etc. Perks that could be relevant are increased damage to animals with Varmint or Hunting rifles, greater quantity of meat able to be looted, etc.

3. Survival Expert: There are a lot of mods out there, any of which could be incorporated into a server for play. Some of my favorite are backpacks and refillable canteens. Items like these could be bought from vendors, sure. But someone has to make them, right? Such useful items could be made by a Wastelander who has spent his entire life braving the wild, and he could sell these items to shops, or to other players, or even use them himself.

4. Electronics Expert: Things like Night Vision Scopes, Stealth Boys, and Night Vision Goggles don't grow on trees, someone with the advanced knowledge would be needed to craft them. While items like these could be scavenged, if player demand is to be met someone will have to have the know how. Again, with available mods that could be incorporated, the sky is still the limit. Thermal vision, 2 way radios for communications, even Pip Boy upgrades...

5. Gambler: New Vegas needs some tweaks to it's gambling system, obviously. A 10 luck character pretty much just rakes in the caps at casino's until they're banned. Some changes could be made to make it more challenging, so as not to promote everyone being a Gambler, but those that choose to be still can be. Someone needs to buy the items from the crafters, afterall. :D

6. Cook: Some of the more advanced meals that heal starvation could be this specialty. All players could cook your basic steaks, kebab's, and make some trail mix, but it would take a true culinary professional to provide truly exceptional meals.

There are always the reliable guns, ammunition, weapon mods, explosives, drugs/doctors, and armor crafters.

So, what do you guys have in mind yourselves?
