Hello!

It's been almost 15 years since I initially created this project. I have a lot of fond memories of the community and the mod we have created together. Unfortunately, due to the complex and time intensive nature of our endeavour, we have never managed to completely realize our dream of crafting a fully functional multiplayer experience for Fallout 3.

Most of you will probably have heard of Fallout 76, which is Bethesda's first online video game taking place in the Fallout universe. Although lacking a lot of the customizability we aimed for with vaultmp, it's worth checking out.

I've decided to make the forums, the wiki/documentation, and various other resources related to vaultmp public again to offer them as reference to anyone who might be interested. All sites consist of read-only, static pages - no edits can be made.

Thank you to everyone who has ever tested, played, or contributed to vaultmp. You have not been forgotten!

This is an intermediate release with a lot of new features and fixes. It still lacks server-side damage calculation / hit detection, which is planned for gary 3. See this video using this release: https://fuch.si/dh

A lot of fixes and improvements
Huge extensions to server-side scripting interface
Inventory now completely server-sided, resolving several issues
Foundational / default scripts for getting started

Please update your version. Previous releases will no longer be able to use the master server.

Note: the Windows version of the server comes with pre-compiled foundational scripts. On Linux, you have to compile them yourself. Ask in the forums or checkout the makefile in the repository for help on this.

2013-10-19 (hotfix): A freeze which sometimes occured when moving objects between cells has been fixed. Only the client needs to be re-downloaded

This is a bugfix release ("gary 2.8") which resolves the following issues:

Desync of alert / sneaking state
"Radiation suit equipment bug"
vaultgui no longer depends on VC++12 runtime
Overall improvements and bugfixes

New features:

Item lists (scripting)
Kick script function
host parameter (vaultserver.ini)
Command line argument overwrites (vaultserver)
DOOR and TERM types in scripting records header
Deletion of static in-game objects
Proper support of moving items between cells via scripts

Future vaultmp releases will no longer support Fallout: New Vegas. I decided to streamline my work on vaultmp. Maintaining compatibility with both games is quite an amount of extra work I had to do in the past. As you may know, I'm working pretty much alone on this project (except for: GUI and databases by roby65).

I'll commit a git patch which will contain all stuff necessary to re-introduce New Vegas support (if somebody else wants to continue it)

This is a bugfix release ("gary 2.7") which resolves the following issues:

Client crash related to firing of weapons
Overall improvements and bugfixes

New features:

36 new scripting functions
Game data records scripting header (C/C++ only)
Synchronization of static containers
Synchronization of doors / terminals (lock status)
Synchronization of owner status
Synchronization of 9 cells at a time instead of 1
New chat GUI
'keepalive' server setting

Please update your version. Previous releases will no longer be able to use the master server.

Note: I'm aware of a couple of major bugs (i.e. the "radiation suit equipment bug" and "zero health bug"). These have not yet been fixed, but I'm working on it. There will be another bugfix release when I'm done.

Also note that the installation process for the client has changed. To install vaultmp, extract all files of the client package into your Fallout folder. Then run vaultmp/vaultmp.exe or vaultmp/vaultmpd.exe.

Melee weapons not being handled properly
RemoveAllItemsEx startup failure (only experimental)

Please note that this is just another snapshot on the long road of the 0.1a branch. It is not nearly a final alpha version.

The master server is online and will likely stay online.

Major changes in this release:

vaultmp no longer uses savegames
synchronization of weapons*
synchronization of health and death, respawning
synchronization of item environment**
chat GUI (use T for chat in-game)
revamped and extended scripting interface***

* not including throwable weapons
** does not include static references (the ones already present a priori in-game). still experimental
*** the scripting docs have not yet been updated

Known bugs in this release:

desync of alert state when the player is moving. You have to switch state while you are standing still for it to properly sync
vaultmp may crash after a player leaves the server, or after you close the game (the cause is known and I'm working on it)
weapon aiming / firing may be inaccurate if not in ironsight mode

This is basically what I've been working on the past months. In comparison to "revision 147" it got better player sync, the inventory system is back in and working, and most noticeably is the advanced scripting interface which is now available. It is partly documented here:

I decided to stop working on vaultmp support of TES IV: Oblivion. Also I abandoned the idea of adding TES V: Skyrim support in the near future. The main reason for that decision is the extra work I have to put in (although the games are very similar engine-wise, I still have to workaround several quirks in Oblivion, for example).

This may be very bad news for some of you However, the original purpose of the mod was to bring multiplayer experience to the Fallout genre. The approach towards Oblivion wasn't a good idea, retrospectively...

I will leave the source code parts for Oblivion intact (commented out / separate branch, though). If someone wants to continue developing TES support, there is no need to start from scratch.

Hello there,

next release is going to be the version 0.1a - see the issues at GitHub for the stuff which needs to be done. I'm sorry but I can't give an estimate on the release date: I'm employed as a software engineer here and here and here and I'm studying computer science -> busy. I really try to work as much as I can on vaultmp because I love the idea of a Fallout / TES multiplayer myself, I probably feel like some of you do

As always, help on the development part of vaultmp is more than appreciated (and any other support too of course!). If you want to know something about the source code, I'm more than happy to answer your questions (however, I don't have the time to explain the whole code in detail: you need to be able to figure things out yourself pretty well).

OK, this is it again. Hope to be able to post some more updates soon...

Courtesy of Aleksander we now have a simple installer for VaultMP. This installer will automatically place VaultMP.exe and VaultMP.dll file to your Fallout 3/NV directory, default.fos in your game saves directory, and install FOSE.

NOTE: VaultMP requires that the "Games for Windows LIVE Disabler" mod be installed for Fallout 3.

Vault-Tec Multiplayer Mod - "VaultMP" - is a multi-player mod for the PC versions of Bethesda's award-winning role-playing games Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's currently in development, but is going to support the following:

Dedicated server, MasterServer and client including a server browser
Syncing of movement, actions / animations and AI
In-game GUI overlay for chatting
Supporting DLCs as well as Fallout user mods
Scripting on the server to define gameplay rules (PAWN)

Facts which deserve attention before posting on the forums:

VaultMP is in alpha stage. Some of the mentioned features are severally lacking or not persistent at all.
VaultMP is an open-source project. everybody is free to check out the source and contribute. Check the other topics / wiki for more info.
VaultMP is currently being developed by a single person of The Brickster.net Group (me). I have to study and work like everybody has to. Please don't expect me to spent all my free time on VaultMP only.
If you don't like the idea of a multiplayer please note that we don't intend to replace the singleplayer or anything like that.
The forums: be friendly, don't spam, don't flame, share ideas, post suggestions, respect others and so forth. Have fun!
