    Actually, no. Not every torrent is pirated software and not everything on The Pirate Bay is pirated, just most of it.

    Torrents are a great way of splitting bandwidth across hundreds, if not thousands of connections, with limited attachment or need of an original source which saves on digital distribution costs, and is also why it has been picked up by the piracy scene. It is used quite a lot legitimately, the most prominent example I can think of is Blizzard. Their update client uses torrent software, so most of the game files you're downloading aren't even directly from Blizzard's servers.
